Joshua Kipchumba earned Kenya’s first medal at the World Masters Athletics Championships ongoing in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The 55-year-old Kipchumba clinched silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:27.45 on Tuesday evening.
Kipchumba’s performance saw him narrowly edged out by Pascal Ruiz of France, who secured the gold with a time of 10:26.54 while Spanish athlete Juan Prieto rounded out the podium with a bronze medal after finishing in third place
Joshua Kipchumba remains optimistic about his prospects in the men’s 800m and 1500m events, which are yet to come.
“It has been a long time since I last competed in this event. I am grateful to God for the position I achieved, as I was expecting to finish around fourth or fifth. I am hopeful to perform better in upcoming competitions,” he said.
The World Masters Athletics Championships, which commenced on Tuesday, features over 8,000 athletes from around the globe and will run until August 25.
