She will be conferred the honorary degree during the university’s 13th graduation ceremony on November 21, 2024.
“The University of Eldoret’s decision to bestow this honorary degree reflects Kipyegon’s contribution to both sports and education, as her achievements continue to inspire young athletes and students across Kenya and beyond,” the university said.

It’s in recognition of their significant contributions in a particular field, society or humanity at large, even if they have not completed the traditional academic requirements for the degree.
Honorary degrees are symbolic and do not usually confer the same academic or professional rights as an earned degree but rather serve to honour extraordinary achievements and inspire the graduating class.
They are usually awarded at regular graduation ceremonies, at which recipients are invited to make acceptance speeches before the assembled faculty and graduates.
The event forms the highlight of the graduation ceremony.
