President William Ruto on Thursday designated Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi as the acting Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
In his first assignment as the acting CS for Interior moments after being gazetted by the head of state, Mr Mudavadi who is also the CS for Foreign Affairs in turn gazetted Friday as a National Holiday.
This follows the ruling by the High Court which removed a conservatory order which had barred the swearing in of the former Interior Cs Prof Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President.
In a Gazette notice issued on Thursday evening and signed by President Ruto, Prof Kindiki who was nominated as the second in command on October 18 is expected to be sworn in on Friday in a public function which kicks off at 10.00am at KICC.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act and Section 3 (b) and 12 (3) of the Assumption of Office of President Act, declares Friday the 1st of November, 2024 to be a public holiday, being date of swearing in of the Deputy President designate,” said the gazette notice signed by Mr Mudavadi moments after being handed the mantle to act in the Interior Ministry
On Thursday afternoon a three judge bench had removed the conservatory orders which had been granted to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after he was impeached by the National Assembly and the decision upheld by the senate.
In their decision, Justices Anthony Mrima, Eric Ogola and Fred Mugambi cited the need for continuity of the deputy president office as stipulated by the constitutions which rules out any vacancy in the said office.
