Nearly,300 kidnapped Nigeria school going children have been released after they were abducted two weeks ago from their school in North Western state of Kaduna, officials said on Sunday.
Nigeria has had cases of abduction happening every year and more than 1400 students have been kidnapped from Nigerian schools since 2014.
In recent years abductions have been rampant in Nigeria’s northwestern and central regions.
The governor of Kaduna state did not give details of the release of the 287 students kidnapped in their school in Kuriga on March 7.
100 of the students were aged 12 years and below.
Kaduna governor thanked Nigerian President Bola Tinibu for ensuring that the kidnapped school children are released unharmed.
Kaduna governor had swore to save the school children without paying ransom.
Ransoms are normally paid for kidnappings arranged by families and it is quite rare for officials to admit
Locals have blamed bandit groups for kidnappings and mass killings.
The Kaduna governor thanked Nigerian security forces and officials for the release of the students.
“I spent sleepless nights with the National Security Adviser, Mal. Nuhu Ribadu … fine-tuning strategies and coordinating the operations of the security agencies, which eventually resulted to this successful outcome,”he said.
