A truck rammed into students who were on their way out of school killing six of them on Tuesday in Iraq’s southern province of Basra,authorities said.
Fourteen others sustained serious injuries.
“Police in Basra arrested the truck driver who ran over six students, killing them and injuring 14” others in the Al-Hartha region, interior ministry spokesperson Miqdad Miri said.
According to reports the driver “lost control of the truck when the brakes failed,” he added in a statement
Road accidents since 2022, have claimed the lives of more than 4,900 people, an average of 13 per day in Iraq,according to health ministry figures.
According to officials, many road accidents occur due to careless drivers who ignore speed limits, use their phones behind the wheel and alcohol consumption.
