A 16-year-old form 3 girl was shot to dead by bandits four days ago in the Babala area along the Isiolo-Merti Road in Kenya, the act was denounced by the Isiolo Women Peace Caucus.
The murder occurred just two months after another incident in which a Pakistani Sheikh was shot and killed while travelling down the Isiolo-Garbatula Road to a place of religious pilgrimage in Garbatula.
The deceased, a St. Paul’s Kiwanjani Secondary School student, was heading to Merti, her hometown, to see her parents and spend her April break.
Human rights activist Anab Kassim and chairperson of the Samburu Council of Elders Joyce Nairisiae claim that the security personnel in the area is not doing enough to guarantee travellers’ safety, as seen by the majority of drivers abandoning the Isiolo-Merti Road due to crime rates
“We were saddened by the incident na tunaona ni kama tunarudishwa nyuma kama wamama wa wafugaji. We are trying to forge the way forward how we will live in this region,” Nairisiae said.
“We are making it hard for the security personnel…all the roads are currently insecure. People can no longer move from one place to the other without being accompanied by officers,” added Kassim.
The women want the Kenyan government to tame the rising cases of insecurity in the region.
Police said investigations are underway to arrest the bandits who shot the student.
